Everyone knows how to "memorize" things. I can prove this because all of us can immediately pop off a whole slew of music lyrics right now. There's something about music that helps us memorize things forever. In fact, there are music lyrics from 20 years ago that are still in my head to this day.
So, one of the easy ways to combine memory and Scripture is to put Scripture to music. Luckily the folks at Seeds Family Worship who have done this for us. If you like it and think your kids will like it, there are lots of CD's available at their website.
Pretty catchy...I'm singing a couple of them right now!

Starting on Sunday, January 8th, we'll have some new themes and big ideas that we'll be leading children through on Sunday mornings for the month of January.
As usual, it helps you as parents know what we're talking about so that you can reinforce what we're teaching on Sunday's, so that, as we work together (parents and church), we can make a difference for Christ in the next generation. So, here are the summary videos for the month of January. Watch them, and begin to ask God to give you insight into how these can become part of your conversations with your kids.

Christmas is BIGGER...
...than simply a baby born and put in a manger. It's one of the climactic moments of God's entire redemptive plan that was set in place before the creation of the world...a redemptive plan that is not finished...YET!

Friday Media...
One of the great things that has started to happen in the last decade is this deep look into one of the "unwanted" or "undesired" outcomes of children who grow up in church. We've all heard the statistics about how many of the kids who grow up in church and yet, when they reach adulthood, they leave the church/faith.
There's all kinds of things I could say here...in fact, I have my own ideas/opinions/hypothesis, about why this tends to happen.
There's a study coming out of Fuller Seminary in CA called "Sticky Faith." When I heard the main thesis of the book, it matched many of the thoughts that I had about this phenomenon. It's set to release later this year, but the authors have provided a bit of summary for us. It's an audio podcast summarizing their findings.

I think this is something you should listen to and consider in your own parenting!

Kids and Facebook
I found this to be an interesting take on kids and Facebook...
When should you let your kids use Facebook
My own personal thoughts are if the rules say 13 is the age you have to be...and your kid is 11 and has a Facebook...that means you either lied for them or you don't care if they lied and bent the rules. I know what you're thinking...everyone is doing it! You might even think I'm taking too hard of a stance. However, if you think I'm taking too hard a stance, go to www.firewheelchurch.com and listen to Pastor Jerry's message on integrity from a couple of weeks ago. Integrity is so tough sometimes, and I'm with you in that battle! Now, don't hear me condemning you...that's not what I'm saying. You could just as easily point a finger back at me in other avenues of life.
Instead, what I'd ask you to consider is to whether or not you've really thought about when, how, and why you let your kids be on social media websites.
What are your thoughts?

Last week's "Friday Media" was geared around the memorization of Scripture. Well, I figured that we would continue the theme. Everyone knows how to "memorize" things. Friday Media...
"I have hidden Your word in my heart...that I might not sin against God."
The author of the Psalms helps us connect the reality that memorizing Scripture is critical to living a life where sin is decreased and following God is increased. The problem with the internet...
A good friend of mine and I have had previous discussions about an idea involving the internet. One day we were talking about the reality that people say and do all kinds of things they would never say and do when they can hide behind the internet instead of being face to face with that person. And then, the other day, he found this video and sent it to me.
You might be wandering...Robert, what does this have to do with parenting. Here's what. Every generation from this point on is growing up in the online world. 10 year old's have facebook (forget the problem that they are on their illegally, and that they either have hid it from their parents or their parents have helped them lie about their age...that's a whole other issue). They are growing up "detached" from having to tell people hard things face to face. They can just shoot off a text, fire off an email, or send a facebook message.
We see this even in adults. We've all heard stories of people breaking up a relationship with a text message or leaving a church that has invested in them for years with a short email. We all do this...instead of having discussions face to face or being respectful enough to sit down with someone and explain ourselves, we hide behind the computer...feeling like it would be less awkward. But it's not less awkward...especially not for the person receiving the message...they just think you don't care about them enough to have a face-to-face conversation (and that can be an awkward feeling).
But remember what this video says, there are some things that we would never say to someone's face, that we might send electronically. How can you model and train your children to not "hide" behind the perceived anonymity of the internet and to grow up being careful of how someone might hear what they are "sending" with a few quick finger strokes?.
These are just some of the thoughts running through my head today...if it seems like a jumbled mess of thoughts, it's because that's what it feels like in my brain too. I'm still mulling some of this over...but I think there's a problem with the internet!

This Is Your Brain On _________
The effects of technology are all around us. I've been on this earth almost three decades, and I am just astonished at how far technology has moved us. I was a proud owner of the original Nintendo (as a matter of fact I still have it hooked up at home), but the difference between the original Nintendo and the Wii or PS3 is just incredible.
Technology has given us all kinds of things at our fingertips that astonish me. Right now, I can go to my contacts, pull up somoene's name, press one button and have a map to their house from my location...it's amazing stuff.
What we don't always think about is the potential negative effects that technology can have on us. I read a recent article in the New York Times about the effects of technology on our brains. I found it extremely interesting. It may be worth your consideration personally and especially if you're raising kids.

A Distracted Generation
I don't know if I agree with everything written in this NY Times article, but I think they bring up an interesting point. Is the prevalence of technological distractions and an new "thing" on every virtual corner affecting the brains of a younger generation? We do know that they are growing up very differently than you and I did, but how does technology play into this?
